Herman J. Groenewald, born on 20 October 1946 in South Africa, began his artistic journey at a young age.
Groenewald later advanced his studies at the Cape Town Art School, training under renowned artists Kevin Atkinson and Stanley Pinker—both represented in national galleries. Although he completed a commercial art course, he soon realised that commercial practice did not align with his creative vision, prompting him to pursue a more expressive and personal artistic path.
His first public exhibition in 1980 was an immediate success, leading to numerous exhibitions over the decades, with his most recent exhibition held in October 2024. Alongside painting, Groenewald worked as a professional lithographer for 17 years and later established a successful career in makeup artistry, eventually teaching beauty, film, and special effects makeup.
Groenewald works across landscapes, portraits, still life, and selected abstract compositions.
